During the 25th World Scout Jamboree in Saemangeum, Korea, Overall 3,000 Catholic participants celebrated Sunday Mass.
Young Catholic Scouts from all over the world felt that they were all children of God and brothers and sisters in the Sacrifice of Mass.
The participants of the 25th World Scout Jamboree held in Saemangeum, North Jeolla Province held Sunday Mass at the campsite on the 6th of August, the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. Despite the added difficulties of running the event, Catholic Scout participants had time to pray while participating in Mass. About 3,000 people, including 456 members of the Catholic Scout Federation of Korea, participated in the Mass, which was jointly celebrated by Bishop Byeong-ho Lee, former Archdiocese of Jeonju, Auxiliary Bishop Guobi of the Archdiocese of Seoul, and 40 priests from various countries.
Bishop Lee Byung-ho said in a homily at the Mass that day, “I deeply apologize for causing great inconvenience to my dear young friends because we were not able to properly prepare for this gathering.” Then, quoting the Gospel (Matthew 17:1-9), “Just as Jesus took only the three disciples who he loved the most and went up a high mountain to show his face shining, it is especially the Lord that you have come to this difficult Saemangeum. It is because there is a mission to entrust to you,” he explained. He said, “Please join us in saving Mother Earth and the whole of nature, which is struggling in the fight against the forces of death today. We can make a big contribution,” he said.
In addition, Bishop Lee mentioned the Jamboree mission statement, ‘Draw your dream!’, and emphasized that “the biggest dream a person can have is a dream about God” and that “there is nothing more important than engraving God in one’s heart.” . He continued, “If you imitate Jesus and engrave the Word of God in your heart and do not forget it, then you will hold the ‘sword of the Spirit’ in your hand. Finally, Bishop Lee said to the scout members, “You are today’s David, today’s warriors for the kingdom of God.”
Father Lee Byung-chul (in charge of Catholic Scouting in the Archdiocese of Seoul), the representative priest of the Korea Catholic Scouts, said, “Despite the difficult situation, the Sunday mass was safely celebrated. The Scouts who participated were also in a bright and lively atmosphere, it was a thrilling moment to confirm that the youth people around the world are one as Catholics.” he said.
Since August 1, 2023, a total of 43,281 people from 158 countries have participated in this Jamboree, of which 3,600 are Koreans.

새만금 세계스카우트잼버리, 약 3000명 신자들 미사 봉헌
전 세계에서 온 청소년 신자 스카우트 대원들이 미사성제 안에서 모두 같은 하느님의 자녀이자, 형제자매임을 느꼈다.
전북 부안 새만금에서 열린 ‘제25회 세계스카우트잼버리’ 대회 참가자들은 주님의 거룩한 변모 축일인 6일 야영장에서 주일 미사를 봉헌했다. 대회 운영에 어려움이 가중된 상황이었지만, 가톨릭 신자 스카우트 참가자들은 미사에 참여하며 기도에 임하는 시간을 가졌다. 전 전주교구장 이병호 주교와 서울대교구 구요비 보좌주교, 각국 사제단 40여 명이 공동집전한 미사에는 한국가톨릭스카우트연맹 대원 456명을 비롯해 약 3000명이 참여했다.
이병호 주교는 이날 미사 강론에서 “이번 모임을 제대로 준비하지 못해 사랑하는 젊은 친구 여러분에게 큰 불편을 끼친 데 대해 깊이 사과한다”며 “나머지 일정은 좋은 나날이 되기를 기대하고 또 기도하겠다”고 운을 뗐다. 이어 이날 복음(마태 17,1-9)을 인용해 “예수님께서 가장 사랑하시는 세 제자만 데리고 높은 산으로 올라가셔서 당신 얼굴이 빛나는 모습을 보여주신 것처럼, 여러분이 이 어려운 새만금에 오게 된 것도 특별히 주님께서 맡기실 사명이 있기 때문”이라고 설명했다. 그러면서 “오늘날 죽음의 세력을 상대로 한 싸움에서 처절한 어려움을 겪는 어머니 지구와 자연 전체를 살리는데 동참해달라”며 “여러분 또래인 그레타 툰베리처럼 다른 이들과 힘을 합해 일하면, 기후위기 문제를 개선하는 데 크게 이바지할 수 있다”고 강조했다.
아울러 이 주교는 이번 잼버리 사명 선언문 ‘네 꿈을 그려라!’를 언급하며 “사람이 가질 수 있는 제일 큰 꿈은 하느님에 대한 꿈”이라며 “하느님을 마음속에 새기는 일보다 더 중요한 것은 없다”고 역설했다. 이어 “예수님을 본받아 하느님의 말씀을 마음에 새겨 잊지 않으면 여러분은 ‘성령의 칼’을 손에 잡는 셈”이라며 “골리앗을 상대로 싸워 이긴 소년 다윗처럼 어떤 전투에서나 승리를 거둘 것”이라고 말했다. 이 주교는 끝으로 스카우트 대원들을 향해 “여러분은 오늘날의 다윗, 하느님 나라를 위한 현대의 용사들”이라며 “하느님께서 늘 지켜주시며 성령의 빛과 힘으로 무장시켜 주시기를 바란다”고 덕담했다.
한국가톨릭스카우트 대표 사제 이병철(서울대교구 가톨릭스카우트 담당) 신부는 “어려운 상황에도 미사를 무사히 거행했다. 참여한 스카우트 대원들도 밝고 활기찬 분위기였다”며 “전 세계 청소년이 가톨릭 신자로서 하나임을 확인해 가슴 벅찬 순간이었다”고 전했다.
1일부터 이번 잼버리에는 총 155개국 3만 9000여 명이 참여했으며, 그중 한국인은 3600여 명이다.
