Thursday, May 1st, 2025 – On the occasion of Labour Day, Catholic Scouting in Niger was reborn from its ashes through the official launching celebration of Catholic Scouting in Niger, presided over by Archbishop Laurent LOMPO of Niamey.

The celebration began with a welcoming address by Father Wilfried A. Jérôme, Chaplain, who greeted the presence of Archbishop Laurent LOMPO, the concelebrating priests, the 153 gathered young scouts, and the representatives of the Association of Scouts of Niger.

The chaplain explained that this launching ceremony is the culmination of an initiative taken during the international Catholic Scouting conference held in Dakar in 2022, aimed at reviving Catholic Scouting in Niger.

After the homily by Archbishop Laurent, who emphasized the meaning of work in the life of a Christian—especially for young scouts—and of scouting as a means for interreligious dialogue and peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims, the chaplain proceeded with the presentation of the Scout insignia (Bible, Light, and Scarf) to Chief Manassé Amavi, who was appointed as the first leader and guide of the movement.

The scarf was placed on Manassé by Chief Lamine, International Commissioner of ASN.

At the end of the celebration, scarves were blessed and given to the parish chaplains, followed by the blessing of group leaders and the presentation of lights, symbolizing the mission of Christ and the responsibility of leadership within parish-based groups.

The launch celebration concluded with a solemn blessing of the entire assembly, followed by a group photo with the various participants of the launch mass.

After the mass, training sessions took place—first led by the Archbishop, who spoke about scouting as a tool to foster interreligious dialogue. Then Chief Nasser led an activity, and finally, Father Alain Aka concluded the day with a formation session on the fundamentals of scouting.

The joy of the gathering was palpable during a hearty meal that brought renewed energy to the youth.

This day was a great success. With hope that collaboration with ASN members will help revitalize Catholic Scouting, participants departed with joy and the hope of carrying the torch of Catholic Scouting’s revival in Niger, under the supreme guidance of Archbishop Laurent LOMPO.
