The European-Mediterranean Region had its annual Seminar Council meeting this year in the Holy city of Fátima, hosted by the Corpo Nacional de Escutas, Portugal.
Our weekend started on Thursday November 21st, early evening, at our host’s Headquarters in Lisbon where we had a short briefing and welcome speech from João Teixeira, member of the CNE National Team, and Carlos Alberto Pereira, CNE’s Chief Scout. We then went for dinner at a next-door fine dining restaurant before heading to our proposed destination: Fátima.
On Friday, the program started with the Morning Prayer and an Opening Session by Gerry Glynn, ICCS-EM [former] Regional Secretary. The morning sessions focused on ICCS-EM annual theme: “Walk in the Light”. The first one was prepared and presented by Teresa Messias, Theology Professor who tackled the subject from an Anthropological, Theological and Biblical perspective. The second session addressed the same subject from a Scouting perspective; it was prepared and presented by Paulo Valdez, Scout Leader and Trainer within CNE. We thank both Teresa and Paulo for their precious contribution.
Throughout the seminar we had the chance to share our thought regarding different topics, in small working groups and in plenary sessions. Participants had the possibility to choose among five different subjects: Prayer and Scouting; Nature: God’s creature; Scouting and Pope Francis’ appeal; Scouting and non-ordained Chaplains; Working with non-Catholics.
Our Council meeting started on Saturday afternoon. Gerry Glynn presented the 2013 Annual Report, the Strategic Plan for 2013-2018 and the 2014 Program. The Financial Report and Budget were presented by Alexander Fischhold our Regional Treasurer. The Council also received Recommendations and Resolutions from the member associations.
After Saturday Council session we walked to Our Lady of Fátima Basilica were the vigil mass was presided by the local Parish Priest assisted by the ICCS Chaplains. Later, we took a coach to Leiria, where had a surprise dinner at Leiria Castle.
During the Council meeting Gerry Glynn, who had just ended his second mandate as Regional Secretary, handed the Torch Flame to Antoine Maksoud, from les Scouts du Liban, who was elected as the new ICCS-EM Leader. In the name of the ICCS-EM Committee and all the Member Associations in the region, we would like to express our greatest appreciation towards Gerry’s devotion and commitment, and wish him success in his future missions. Thank you Gerry!
We also would like to express our trust and full support to Antoine and wish him the best in his new responsibilities. The ICCS-EM Committee would like to thank all the Member Associations and their representatives who attended the meeting and contributed to its success. A distinct recognition to our Friends who shared with us this weekend: Alessandra Silvi, ICCG-Europe Chair; Sister Madeleine Bourcereau and Sister Anne-Marie Margottin from “La Sainte Croix de Jérusalem”; Marius Schlageter [Scout Week of Taizé]; Aline Aways [Les Scouts du Liban] and all the persons who generously offered their services mainly Paul Holland for his prompt and accurate translation.
This Seminar Council Meeting wouldn’t have been successful without the impeccable organization and support of Corpo Nacional de Escutas and the Blue Team, who showed us lots of care and attention. Thank you.
